Tasmania's Channel, Huon Valley and South West Wilderness

This is a region of waterways and wilderness, primary produce and arts and crafts. As you travel further south, this region's character gradually becomes more untamed and rugged.

The D'Entrecasteaux Channel is a peaceful region. Its sheltered coves and bays make it a favourite haunt of boating enthusiasts and recreational fishermen. A vehicular ferry departs from Kettering for the northern end of Bruny Island. This is a fascinating and scenic island that you should set some time to thoroughly explore it. Bruny Island Charters provide one of Australia's great adventure tourism experiences.

The Cygnet area and Port Huon contain studios of artists, potters and wood turners, antique shops and wineries. Fields of fruit trees in blossom creating a riot of colour in Spring enhance the Huon region. This region was so prolific at producing apples that Tasmania itself was often referred to as the Apple Isle.

A host of comfortable, country bed and breakfast accommodations provide the best of Tasmanian hospitality and modern facilities to travellers from around the world. For example: Huon Franklin Cottage

The Huon and Picton Rivers are the focus for a range of activity from gentle cruising to white water rafting amongst magnificent forests. The Tahune Airwalk has become a major tourist attraction, accessible from Geeveston. The Huon region borders the Southwest Wilderness which can be reached from Cockle Creek or by light aircraft from Hobart.

Cockle Creek is the southernmost point you can visit by car in Australia. It is beautiful in its own right but is also well known as the place where one sets off on foot to explore Tasmania's wild south coast.

Nearby are the stunning limestone formations of Hastings Caves and Australia's longest cave system, Exit Cave. You certainly don't want to miss exploring the southernmost region of Australia's southernmost state.
