Ulverstone and the Central Coast

Bring your bikes, your fishing rods and walking shoes and take advantage of this wonderful location on Tasmania's beautiful and accessible Central Coast. The 'backbone' of this rich agricultural district is the Dial Range, which overlooks the towns of Ulverstone and Penguin.

Follow walking trails for stunning views or spend the day exploring beaches, parks and playgrounds. Walk along the breakwater, drop a line and try your luck, or try freshly cooked fish and chips, just upriver. Travel further inland to picnic spots and swimming holes along the Leven River, as it winds its way through farmlands to the sea. The yawning Leven Canyon, Gunns Plains caves and waterfalls are all less than an hour's drive from town.

Linking the two townships, the old coast road hugs a scenic coastline, sprayed by winter
seas and roadside gardens that flower all year round. See animals at close range at nearby deer farms or native animals in the wild at Loongana. And in the lingering twilight hours, nestle by the rocks and boobyalla, to watch the fairy penguins return from their day out at sea.

An historical note:

The township of Ulverstone has five memorial parks commemorating Australia's military
history, bordering the Leven River. Many of Penguin's residents are descendants of people brought out as assisted immigrants by church organisations on the North West Coast in the late 1800s, to 'even out' the number of convict settlers in the district.
